Venice, 30 August (LaPresse) – "It is a journey through time, space and memory. Between what is, what has been and what could be. Naples is like an immense time machine, which always takes us between space and history and stories. In a time of constant transformation. I always think of my films as my last, and having thought of this film as my last, it was right that it should be in black and white.‘ So said director Gianfranco Rosi when he met the press at the Venice Film Festival for the presentation of his documentary “Sotto le nuvole”, shot in Naples. ’Why Naples? Why not? It's a huge challenge. I made a couple of trips as a tourist and then I discovered this dimension. My first impression of Naples is like an immense outfield, which always hides something from what you see,‘ added the director, who won the Golden Lion in 2013 with “Sacro Gra”. ’I filmed the other Naples, that of the Vesuvian villages. In Naples, I only filmed in the basement of the Mann (National Archaeological Museum, ed.), the history of archaeology,‘ he said. On the film's title, Rosi said: ’For me, clouds are a kind of protection, you don't have shadows and excess light. In black and white, the presence of clouds is even more important. Then in Naples it rains a lot and there are wonderful clouds.‘ Rosi also spoke about the excess of tourism that plagues large cities such as Naples today. ’Excessive tourism is now a feature of all large cities, it is a kind of colonisation that destroys the entire social fabric," he concluded.
