Rome, 23 March (LaPresse) – The UN World Meteorological Organisation states that our planet is accumulating far more thermal energy than it can dissipate, due to greenhouse gas emissions such as carbon dioxide. This record-breaking ‘energy imbalance’ heated the ocean to unprecedented levels last year and has continued to melt our planet’s ice caps. Scientists also fear that a natural warming phase known as El Niño, which is expected to begin by the end of the year, could soon lead to new temperature records. In response to the report, UN Secretary-General António Guterres reiterated his call for countries to move away from fossil fuels in favour of renewable energy to “ensure climate security, energy security and national security”. “Planet Earth is being pushed beyond its limits. Every key climate indicator is flashing red,” he warned in his video address. According to the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), the last 11 years have been the 11 warmest on record on Earth, dating back to 1850.
