Rome, March 4 (LaPresse) – One year imprisonment, with suspended sentence, is the sentence confirmed by the Court of Cassation, for Giorgio Galanti, the former Fiorentina medical consultant and former director of sports medicine at Careggi. During his indictment, the prosecutor of the Supreme Court had asked for the rejection of the appeal, requesting in fact the confirmation of the sentence imposed by the judges of the Court of Appeal. The doctor was charged with the offence of manslaughter after the death of Fiorentina captain Davide Astori, who died at the age of 31 on 4 March 2018 in a hotel in Udine, where the team was in training camp for the championship match against the Friulians. Investigations revealed that the death occurred due to an ‘arrhythmogenic ventricular cardiomyopathy’ that was never diagnosed, but despite this, Galanti issued two certificates of competitive fitness without carrying out thorough cardiac examinations on the footballer's state of health.
