Naples, 2 May (LaPresse) – The use of hydroalcoholic solution in hospitals is declining. This is underlined by the Higher Institute of Health in view of the Hand Hygiene Day, celebrated by the World Health Organisation every year on 5 May, on the occasion of which the IHS reopens the distance learning course (Fad) dedicated to the procedure and updates the surveillance data on the consumption of hydroalcoholic solution in hospitals, which report a steady decline in recent years in the use. WHO campaign materials translated into Italian and a list of regional initiatives are also made available on the Institute's Epicentre website. The Iss coordinates the surveillance system of hydroalcoholic solution (Csia) consumption in healthcare facilities. According to the latest available figures, which update those published last November with additional data for two regions, in 2023 the national median figure was 10.5 litres per 1,000 hospital days for ordinary hospital stays. Consumption varies by area: highest in intensive care (39.9 litres per 1,000 days of ordinary hospital stay), lowest in orthopaedics (8.9 litres per 1,000 days of hospital stay). The two autonomous provinces of Trento and Bolzano show values above the average, while several southern regions show lower values. Over the years, a progressive decline in consumption has been observed in all areas, with consumption for ordinary inpatient stays having halved in the last three years, falling below the threshold value of 20 litres. On the other hand, the number of facilities participating in the surveillance is growing (690).
