Milan, May 12 (LaPresse) – “It’s a completely unimaginable event; he had never shown any signs of psychological imbalance and had been granted external work release both for his model behavior in prison and the awareness he had demonstrated regarding the crime he committed.” This is what lawyer Daniele Umberto Tropea, legal representative of Emanuele De Maria, told LaPresse. De Maria, an inmate at Bollate prison, committed suicide on Sunday by jumping from the Milan Cathedral after stabbing a 51-year-old colleague on Friday, killing another employee at Hotel Berna where he worked under Article 21, and disappearing for 48 hours.
He had been arrested in 2018 in Germany and, in 2021, was definitively sentenced to 14 years for the 2016 murder of a sex worker in Castel Volturno. His sentence was reduced by one third due to a shortened trial procedure, and the crime was considered an “impulsive act,” committed without any aggravating circumstances. The Surveillance Court of Milan had granted him the prison benefit based on the “entirely positive reports” from the educational team at Bollate prison, the lawyer explained.
