Milan, 17 May (LaPresse/AP) – The Vatican could be a venue for peace talks between Russia and Ukraine. This was stated by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio before meeting with Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, the Vatican's envoy to Ukraine, welcoming the proposal put forward some time ago by the Holy See and after Pope Leo XIV promised that he would personally make “every effort” to help end the war. Speaking to reporters in Rome before meeting with Zuppi, Rubio said he would discuss possible ways the Vatican could help, as well as ‘the state of the talks, updates after yesterday’ and ‘the way forward.’ Asked if the Vatican could act as a peace mediator, Rubio replied: ‘I wouldn't call it a mediator,’ but ‘I think it's a place where both sides would feel comfortable.’ ‘So we'll talk about all of that, and obviously we'll always be grateful to the Vatican for its willingness to play this constructive and positive role,’ Rubio added.
