Turin, July 1 (LaPresse) – Elisabetta Cocciaretto made her debut at Wimbledon, the third Grand Slam of the season on the grass courts of the All England Lawn Tennis Club. The 24-year-old from Fermo, ranked 116th in the WTA rankings, defeated the US player Jessica Pegula, ranked 3rd in the rankings and seeded 3rd, who was fresh from her title win in Bad Homburg last Sunday, with a score of 6-2, 6-3 in just 58 minutes. This is the Italian's second career victory over a top ten player (after Kvitova at Roland Garros in 2023). On Thursday, Cocciaretto will face either American Katie Volynets, ranked 98th, or German Tatjana Maria, ranked 45th in the WTA rankings, winner at Queen's two weeks ago but, more importantly, a semifinalist at Wimbledon in 2022. The Marche native is making her third appearance in the main draw of the British Major, where she reached the second round in 2022 and the third in 2023, while last year she had to withdraw due to a viral infection.
