Rome, 9 July (LaPresse) – Claudio Ercoli, an inspector working for Eni, died during the night after suffering severe burns in an explosion on Friday at an LPG station on the outskirts of the capital. The 54-year-old man was among the most seriously injured: third-degree burns over 55% of his body left him with no chance of survival. He died of irreversible thermal shock, despite attempts by medical staff at the Sant'Eugenio burns unit. Ercoli was carrying out a routine technical inspection on the tank when the powerful explosion occurred. The causes of the disaster are still under investigation. Meanwhile, this afternoon, at the plastic surgery department of the Policlinico Umberto I hospital, the two State Police officers involved in the accident, Deputy Inspector Marco Neri and Officer Francesco D'Onofrio, will undergo delicate surgery to reconstruct the areas of their bodies most affected by the flames. Both have suffered extensive burns and remain in a critical condition.
