Rome, July 16 (LaPresse) – A 42-year-old Australian BASE jumper lost his life early this afternoon after jumping from the summit of Sass Pordoi, in Val di Fassa. The man, part of a group of fellow Australians based in the Lupo Bianco area—where he was supposed to land—crashed along a bend of State Road 48 at an altitude of about 1,700 meters, approximately 400 meters above the intended landing zone. A technical problem may have prevented the parachute from opening in time.
The emergency call was made by his companions around 1 p.m. The Single Emergency Coordination Centre dispatched a rescue helicopter, while a mountain rescuer from the Alta Val di Fassa station of the Trentino Alpine and Speleological Rescue team reached the site on foot to assist. The air rescue technician was dropped off with a medical team, which attempted resuscitation without success. Carabinieri and firefighters from Canazei also responded. Once authorization was granted, the victim's body was transported down the mountain by ambulance.
