Palermo, 21 July (LaPresse) – Six officers and non-commissioned officers from the finance police and coast guard investigated by the Crotone public prosecutor's office on various charges of shipwreck and manslaughter will stand trial. The investigating magistrate at the court of Crotone has accepted the request of deputy prosecutor Pasquale Festa to bring to trial the head of the operations room of the air and naval department of the financial police, Giuseppe Grillo, and his colleagues Alberto Lippolis, Antonino Lo Presti and Nicolino Vardaro. Nicola Nania and Francesca Perfido of the coast guard will also stand trial with them on 14 January. According to the Crotone Public Prosecutor's Office, after seeing the boat with 180 people in distress, they abandoned them to their fate. The coast guard claimed that there was no clear risk of shipwreck, while the finance police decided to turn back and interrupt the police operation due to the prohibitive sea conditions.
