Milan, Aug. 9 (LaPresse) – A meeting of the Major Risks Commission was held yesterday at the headquarters of the Civil Protection Department. It was convened by the Head of the Department, Fabio Ciciliano, to provide a technical-scientific assessment of the epidemiological situation related to the circulation of the West Nile Virus (WNV).
The meeting focused on the discussion between members of the environmental and health risk sectors of the Major Risks Commission and external experts, aimed at identifying possible civil protection measures in response to a request for cooperation from the Ministry of Health.
During the meeting, chaired by the Head of the Department, it was emphasized that the virus has been endemic in Italy for some time, and that there is no evidence of an increase in the number of disease cases caused by WNV infection this year. However, a new element compared to previous years is the higher concentration of cases in central and southern regions of the country.
The Commission also noted that, in past years, the peak period typically occurred during the month of August.
