Rome, 23 August. (LaPresse) – ‘Between notebooks, backpacks, diaries, stationery, drawing materials, books and dictionaries, the total cost for the 2025/2026 school year could exceed €1,300 per student, with price increases of between 3% and 5% compared to last year.’ This is according to Codacons, which provides annual estimates of the cost of schooling and the expenses that parents will have to face at the start of the new school year. "Once again, the usual September “blow” is about to hit Italian families. Increases are also expected for books, Codacons warns. In fact, Istat recorded average increases of +3.8% over 2024 for school textbooks in the last month. Codacons' complaints about the high cost of books have been confirmed in a report published by the Antitrust Authority at the beginning of August, which highlights the many critical issues in the sector that affect household spending, from lack of competition (with 80% of the market concentrated in the hands of four publishers) to the odious phenomenon of new editions adopted by schools, books placed on the market with a few pages or images different from the previous edition, but at higher prices'.
