Milan, 24 August (LaPresse) – In Milan, 18.6% of girls and boys born in 2024 have double surnames. This means that 1,700 children, out of a total of 9,147 born last year (with boys accounting for 51.7%), were given both surnames by their families, following the Constitutional Court ruling in June 2022 that abolished the automatic assignment of the father's surname. There are 1,250, or 13.6%, who have only their mother's surname. The percentages remain virtually unchanged if we look at the first six months of this year, when Milan recorded a total of 4,323 newborns. There is little news on the name front. Milanese mothers and fathers are choosing to remain faithful to tradition. In 2024, the top three names for boys were Edoardo, Leonardo and Tommaso, while for girls they were Matilde, Sofia and Beatrice. In the first half of this year, the top three names for boys changed, with Leonardo coming out on top, followed by Tommaso and Edoardo. For girls, Sofia was the most popular name chosen by parents, followed by Beatrice and Vittoria.
