Rome, Sept 7 (LaPresse) – “Our duty is to guarantee everyone the right to freely express their ideas, but peacefully and without weapons,” said Stefano Paoloni, General Secretary of SAP, the Autonomous Police Union.
“The Leoncavallo social center,” the statement reads, “was illegally occupied, and yesterday its supporters confirmed their nature by attacking law enforcement with eggs and paint, not sparing insults and slurs against Interior Minister Piantedosi. Failing to censor and condemn such behavior means being complicit, as were all those who participated in the demonstration, whose outcome was unfortunately predictable, as they provided the opportunity and shield for the uncivil and violent. Once again,” Paoloni continues, “the dignity of those who daily risk their safety to ensure that everyone can freely demonstrate and to secure the country was trampled on. We are confident that those responsible will soon be identified and held accountable for their actions, but those who allowed them to act by participating in the demonstration deserve moral condemnation, which we hope will be unanimous.”
“To the colleagues who were attacked, smeared, and vilified, and to Minister Piantedosi, who was cowardly insulted,” Paoloni concluded, “goes the full solidarity of the Autonomous Police Union.”
