Milan, 26 September (LaPresse) – Bad news for Liverpool defender Giovanni Leoni, who is likely to be out for ‘about a year’ after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left leg. The announcement was made on Friday by Reds manager Arne Slot. The 18-year-old Italian defender, who arrived in the summer from Parma, made his Liverpool debut in the English League Cup victory over Southampton on Tuesday, but his debut was cut short in the eighth minute due to a nasty injury. ‘He's not in a good position, obviously, because he's torn his anterior cruciate ligament, which means he'll be out for about a year,’ Slot said. Leoni's lengthy absence leaves Liverpool with just three centre-backs in their squad. ‘Being so young, coming to a new country, playing so well in his first game… It's very difficult to see the positive side – there's never a positive side, but you always try – and the fact is he's still so young, so he still has many years ahead of him after recovering from such a terrible injury,’ Slot concluded when talking about Leoni.
