Rome, 31 December (LaPresse) – "It has been 411 days since Alberto Trentini was kidnapped. Kidnapping is the right word; we cannot talk about arrest because Alberto has not been formally charged with anything. After all, he has not committed any crime. He is, to all intents and purposes, a political prisoner, kidnapped by a foreign country as a bargaining chip for its own government's interests. Alberto is an Italian citizen, and Italy must feel responsible for bringing him home. Alberto, that name carries no guilt. He is merely a hostage in a game of interests greater than himself. He is a hostage to an increasingly thorny geopolitical situation. But Italy, which sits alongside the “greats” on public occasions, has a duty to try everything possible to bring him home to his parents." Luigi Ciotti, president of Libera and Gruppo Abele, launched an appeal for the freedom of Alberto Trentini – a humanitarian worker from Veneto detained in Venezuela since November 2024 – during his speech at the National March for Peace promoted by the Episcopal Commission for Social Problems and Work, Justice and Peace.
