Milan, 18 January (LaPresse) – A woman attempted to suffocate her 5-month-old daughter with a pillow, but was stopped by the police. It happened in Catania, in the neighbourhood. The police officers who stopped the 20-year-old woman, who is believed to be from Bangladesh and was alone in the house with her daughter while her husband was away, had been alerted by the woman's 15-year-old sister, who was on the lower floor of the house with her parents. The 15-year-old called 112 explaining that her sister, the baby's mother, had locked herself in the bedroom and was threatening to kill her daughter. The police intervened and broke down the bedroom door, where the 20-year-old mother was found in a state of agitation and in the act of holding the pillow over the baby's face. The police restrained the young mother and took the child into their care. Fortunately, the child was saved from her mother's actions thanks to the intervention of the police. Mother and daughter were admitted to San Marco Hospital in Catania. The public prosecutor is expected to assess the measures to be taken.
