Palermo, 27 January (LaPresse) – The head of the national civil protection agency, Fabio Ciciliano, together with the president of the Sicilian region, Renato Schifani, have concluded their aerial inspection of the landslide areas in Niscemi in the province of Caltanissetta. ‘The entire hill is collapsing onto the Gela plain,’ Ciciliano declared upon his arrival at the municipal operations centre. The landslide has rendered dozens of buildings uninhabitable, requiring the creation of a red zone extending 150 metres from the start of the ‘detachment niche’, i.e. from the paved area that has not collapsed. “The situation is particularly complex after an initial inspection we carried out, and we must be honest that even the intact houses overlooking the edge of the landslide can no longer be inhabited,” concluded Ciciliano.
