Trento, 10 February (LaPresse) – "It is our duty to remember one of the most complex and painful chapters in the history of the eastern border and of 20th-century Europe. We must not forget the women, men and children who, during the Second World War and in the years immediately following, were forced to leave Venezia Giulia, Quarnaro and Dalmatia, territories of the Kingdom of Italy: uprooted from their homeland, their loved ones and their homes, and forced to rebuild their lives elsewhere. Their history is part of ours, and we have a duty to remember and honour it. Trentino shared social and cultural ties and a common history within the Austro-Hungarian Empire with the territories of the eastern Adriatic area. Many Trentino natives emigrated to the “Litorale”, as the Julian and Istrian regions were called at the time, and for the same reasons, just as many came to Trentino from there. This web of connections reminds us how border identities are the result of intertwining and coexistence, reminding us that we Trentino residents are called upon to commit ourselves to fostering the spirit of coexistence, dialogue between peoples and collaboration that have always distinguished us and are part of our autonomous communities'. This was stated by the President of the Province of Trento, Maurizio Fugatti, who emphasised that ‘it is also our responsibility to involve the younger generations, because remembering means taking responsibility for the present and the future’.
