Rome, 12 March (LaPresse) – "Was the attack on the Italian base in Erbil deliberate? Absolutely yes. That is a NATO base, which is also American. There had already been incidents or attempted attacks in recent days. We preferred to leave the personnel who were still on mission at that base because it is safer than hotels. We have already brought 102 people back to Italy from that mission. Of the current 141, a return was already being planned, which is not easy because we cannot send a plane and it has to be done by land, from Turkey." This was stated by Defence Minister Guido Crosetto in an interview with Tg1. “The contingent had already been warned of the possibility, and from 8:30 a.m. they had implemented all security measures and entered the protected areas, so there was no damage to the contingent,” Crosetto said, adding, “This war demonstrates more and more that the stabilisation of those areas is essential”.
