Milan, 13 March (LaPresse) – At 12 noon this morning, the rescue operation involving 41 people brought to safety by the Life Support, Emergency’s search and rescue vessel, was completed in international waters within the Libyan SAR zone. The vessel in distress, a drifting rubber dinghy, was spotted directly from the bridge of the Life Support at around 10.50 am. “This morning, from the bridge, we spotted an overcrowded rubber dinghy in distress,” said Jonathan Nanì La Terra, mission leader of the Life Support. “We therefore launched our rescue dinghies, which approached the vessel in distress, on board which none of the people were wearing life jackets. Our rescuers then distributed life jackets to everyone, transferred the shipwrecked people onto our RIBs and brought them safely aboard the Life Support. Our team of medical staff and cultural mediators is looking after the 41 people rescued, whilst we remain on standby with the ship, ready for any further interventions.” The people rescued, all men with the exception of one pregnant woman and nine unaccompanied minors, come from Sudan, Somalia and South Sudan.
