Rome, Jan. 8 (LaPresse) – ‘The video of the chase in which Ramy lost his life is terrible and leaves one with deep anger. The words of the Carabinieri, and even more their behaviour, are unacceptable in a civilised country. As is the fact that the videos recorded by a witness were erased, thus eliminating possible evidence. Many things that were said after the incident – without knowing what they were talking about or even in bad faith – are shameful and contribute to a climate of injustice and mystification'. Avs MEP Ilaria Salis writes this on social media. ‘If today the case can no longer be swept under the carpet, as has happened before in similar situations, we also owe it to the protests of the Corvetto neighbourhood, thanks to which public opinion has started to take an interest in the matter. We owe it to the community of friends and supporters who are demanding truth and justice for Ramy and Fares. But these protests,' Salis continues, ’tell us something that goes beyond Corvetto: they tell us about the systemic racism and classism that permeate our society and that manifest themselves in the lack of opportunities for those living in the suburbs and, often, in the abuse of power. It is the proletarian and mestizo youth of these working-class neighbourhoods who have raised their voices, refusing to be treated as second-class citizens’.
