Ukraine, Crosetto: ‘UN troops or multinational force, Italy could be there’.
Rome, 22 Mar. (LaPresse) – ‘I am happy. After only three months of saying this in every forum they have taken note that the only possible solution is the UN or at least a multinational force’. This is how Defence Minister Guido Crosetto, in an interview with ‘Repubblica’, comments on the four-tier interposition plan for Ukraine, with the UN at the forefront. ‘Even the Chinese ambassador to the UN has said that he basically agrees with the Italian government's proposal that Giorgia Meloni has been supporting for some time: an international or UN mission. The point is that it cannot be just a ‘western’ mission. I believe, however, that the UN can provide a framework, i.e. a cover, legally,‘ she emphasises, “which does not mean a UN mission in the strict sense, but also only under the ”aegis’ of the UN. This may sound like diplomatic sophistry, but it is not. That said, the conditions under which any mission can operate must first be written in the peace agreement, then they must be made operational. It is useless to discuss this now'. Let's talk about common defence. If the EU treaties were changed, could a common European army be achieved? ‘There is no need. The scheme is that of NATO, which is very efficient. If we photocopy that model, we would already have European defence tomorrow. I also said this in Paris: in the meantime let's create a single command and control centre, superimposed on the NATO one,' he replies.
