Rome, June 5 (LaPresse) – “We have reached 2% military spending in relation to GDP, but at that summit they might ask us to reach 3.5%. Under current conditions, we will have to wait a long time before achieving the new goal, and this time I fear we won’t have the possibility to negotiate a postponement. Tariffs, moreover, do not help Europe invest more in defense. American demands, in this case, are contradictory, and we will point this out,” said Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani in an interview with La Stampa, responding to a question about the upcoming NATO summit in The Hague, following his meeting yesterday with Prime Minister Meloni at Palazzo Chigi on the matter.
The European plan to invest in Defense by excluding expenditures from the Stability Pact? “I would be in favor. It is always useful to obtain greater flexibility,” the minister replied.
Have you talked about this with Meloni? “No, not yet. Anyway, my position is not prejudicial. I would like to discuss it with the allies before the next Budget Law,” Tajani suggests. “Then, if the majority does not want to use these funds, I will comply, but I would seize the opportunity.”
