Rome, June 19 (LaPresse) – "None of the changes included in the bill will speed up trials or improve the quality of the service. The problems of the justice system lie elsewhere." This is what Cesare Parodi, president of the National Association of Magistrates (ANM), said in an interview with Avvenire. "There is an urgent need for a rational review of the judicial district map. Action must be taken to fix the dysfunctions of the prison system. And above all, we must address the long-standing shortage of personnel and resources. How does the reform deal with all this? It doesn’t. Instead, the absolute separation of careers seems to us both useless and potentially dangerous: today, in the criminal sector, the role of the public prosecutor, if correctly interpreted, is to investigate in all directions, to protect all citizens; while the role of the judge is solidly grounded in constitutional impartiality. With the reform, however, there is the risk that, over time, the public prosecutor may fall under the influence of the executive. Overall, it seems to us that the bill aims solely to significantly scale down judicial power—and, I must say, in a particularly disheartening way," Parodi added.
