Rome, June 21 (LaPresse) – “This square has a precedent: on April 5, a hundred thousand people said no to rearmament—and they’re reaffirming it today. There is a population—a vast majority—that says this race to rearm is mad, and it is mad to contribute to military escalation while cutting funds from welfare, the socially constructed European model we’ve built over many years, from healthcare and education to nurseries and other citizen needs. This foolish chase for rearmament is only an illusory form of security and will generate ever greater insecurity,” said M5S leader Giuseppe Conte on the sidelines of a march in Rome against rearmament.
“This is an important step for us, an additional demonstration by a populace saying no to rearmament. But we will come together again for another milestone on June 24 in The Hague: I’ve called on all European political forces who share our assessment of this mad race to rearm and military escalation. We will establish—along with other European leaders who share our vision—a permanent platform, a network to oppose this race to rearm at the European and international level,” Conte added.
He also reminded that, “This morning we submitted—with the other leaders of PD and Avs, Schlein, Fratoianni and Bonelli—a joint motion: another step in which we say no to the genocide ongoing in Gaza and we refuse to be distracted by the attacks that criminal Netanyahu is carrying out in Iran and Gaza, where people continue to die under the army, under bombs and under the Israeli army’s snipers. We must not forget the Palestinian population, who are starving and have no schools, housing, or healthcare facilities, and are continuing to die.”
