Rome, July 1 (LaPresse) – The Court of Locri has declared Mimmo Lucano, former mayor of Riace, forfeited from his office. The ruling, applying the Severino law, was issued today by the judges who accepted the appeal filed by the Prefecture of Reggio Calabria with the Civil Court following Lucano’s final conviction to 18 months in prison, suspended sentence, for falsehood. Lucano, now a Member of the European Parliament for Avs, was convicted in the 'Xenia' trial concerning alleged irregularities in managing migrant reception in Riace. During the previous hearing, Locri prosecutor Giuseppe Casciaro and the lawyer representing the Prefecture reiterated that the final conviction under the 'Xenia' trial falls within the cases provided for by the Severino law, thus constituting grounds for ineligibility. Lucano may decide to appeal the ruling, meaning the legal case is not yet closed.
