Rome, 13 August (LaPresse) – ‘This is what Giorgia Meloni wrote ten years ago, when I was in government.’ So said Matteo Renzi, commenting on social media on a post by Meloni from 2015, which reads: ‘Shipwreck in the Strait of Sicily: the Renzi government should be investigated for manslaughter.’ ‘I wonder if she will have the nerve to accuse the opposition of profiteering, she of all people,’ added Renzi. "Meanwhile, she swears she wants to fight human traffickers. When the police arrested one, Almasri, she got scared and sent him home. Today we mourn yet another massacre at sea, caused by human traffickers. Giorgia Meloni should have kept quiet. She should have stayed in Greece, in Albania, wherever she wants. She should have thought about her holidays. And kept quiet. Because she engaged in shameful profiteering when she was in opposition. Now that she is in government, she has helped human traffickers to continue their inhuman business. Since she released Almasri, Giorgia Meloni can no longer talk about fighting human traffickers. After the massacre in Lampedusa, as after Cutro, Giorgia Meloni is now trying to cynically exploit what happened. Please, enough! She should keep quiet and simply show respect for today's victims of the sea and their families. ‘This government does not fight human traffickers, this government releases them and takes them home on state flights,’ he added. ‘Ten years ago, Giorgia Meloni was profiteering from the opposition. Today, she is freeing human traffickers and even giving them a ride on a plane. I don't know if she is capable of feeling shame, but if in doubt, I invite her to remain silent and spare us her cynical and hypocritical statements.’
