Rome, August 17 (LaPresse) – "Overcrowding and suicides are two serious problems, but not related to each other." This was reiterated by Justice Minister Carlo Nordio in an interview with Il Messaggero. "In fact," he added, "many suicide attempts have been thwarted by fellow inmates, who exercise a sort of control. Overcrowding leads more to frustration than despair, which in turn leads to violent uprisings rather than self-harm. Of course, this doesn't mean overcrowding isn't a problem, and we are working to resolve it."
