Rome, 3 September (LaPresse) – "On 3 September 1982, in the attack in Via Isidoro Carini in Palermo, the Mafia assassinated Prefect Carlo Alberto Dalla Chiesa and his wife Emanuela Setti Carraro, seriously injuring officer Domenico Russo, who died a few days later. Forty-three years later, the memory of that cowardly ambush is, for the entire country, a constant reminder of the responsibility and common commitment to the fight against the Mafia.‘ Thus spoke the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella. ’General Dalla Chiesa, in the delicate positions he held during his long career, fought rigorously against terrorism and illegality. As Prefect of Palermo, he led a courageous battle against the insidious criminal presence on the island, even at the cost of his own life, fully aware of the extremely high risk he was exposing himself to," added the Head of State. ‘His example of service to the Republic is followed by the men and women of the judiciary, law enforcement agencies and public administrations who, in their daily duty, work passionately to prevent and combat the expansionist aims of various forms of organised crime,’ he continued. ‘To the Dalla Chiesa, Setti Carraro and Russo families, I renew the Republic's feelings of closeness and gratitude.’
