Rome, Sept. 4 (LaPresse) – “Dear Honorable Member, referring to your letter in which you ask to be informed about what the Italian Government intends to do to ensure protection and safety, if necessary, for the crew of the international initiative called ‘Global Sumud Flotilla,’ in which 40 vessels intend to deliver humanitarian aid to the population of Gaza, I wish to provide the following information.”

Thus begins the response letter from Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to Elly Schlein, leader of the Democratic Party.

“To facilitate the successful delivery of basic necessities to the Palestinian population, considering the limited quantity of aid that can be transported by the vessels involved, we suggest using alternative and more effective delivery channels,” Meloni writes, highlighting:

“Among these, I would point out the channels already activated by the Italian Government, which, as is known, plays a leading role in providing assistance to the civilian population through the humanitarian initiative Food for Gaza, which has enabled the distribution of over 200 tons of essential goods, food, and medical supplies — reaching even the most isolated and hard-to-access areas of the Gaza Strip.”

According to the Prime Minister, “Making use of already active humanitarian channels — not only those of the Italian Government — would avoid exposing participants in the ‘Global Sumud Flotilla’ to the risks of entering a conflict zone, and would also spare the various national authorities involved the burden of ensuring their protection and security.”
