Rome, 7 September (LaPresse) – ‘From the outset, we considered it very risky for the Ukrainians themselves to embrace the prospect of victory over Russia. You cannot close the door on diplomacy when dealing with a global player like Russia.’ This was stated by M5S President Giuseppe Conte in his speech at the sixth edition of the Political Training School of the Patria e Costituzione association. ‘In Shanghai,’ he added, ‘leaders are talking about multilateralism, and it would seem that they are even more reasonable than we are. It should be the West talking about a new world order.’ ‘He never said that we should be out of NATO,’ he continued, ‘but we cannot respond to emergencies without updating the statute. We cannot think of not reforming the methods of confrontation.’ ‘We have,’ he concluded, ‘a disoriented and disconcerted EU. It is unable to speak with one voice. We are unable to reach a consensus on foreign policy. Spending on arms has become almost a “refuge”, but we are unable to develop a common defence plan. We are clinging to the totem of security. Before security, there must be politics in Europe.’
