Rome, 22 Oct. (LaPresse) – ‘We are discussing with our EU and G7 partners further possible new measures relating to frozen Russian assets, in respect of which, however, we believe, and we are not alone in this, that it is necessary to respect international law and the principle of legality, to protect the financial and monetary stability of our economies and the euro area, and to ensure the sustainability of any steps that may be taken’ said Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in the Senate chamber in her communications ahead of the European Council meeting on 23 and 24 October. ‘To get to the negotiating table,’ she added, ‘we need to increase pressure on Moscow, as we are doing with the 19th package of European sanctions, which we are approving and which will help to further reduce the resources that Moscow can allocate to the war effort.’ ‘It is worth repeating,’ she continued, ‘an important concept: economic sanctions are not against the Russian people, they are against the regime that transforms Russia's wealth into weapons and destruction. Every resource that Russia accumulates today is not used to build schools, hospitals, or generate jobs, but to finance war and the destruction of schools, hospitals, and jobs in Ukraine.’
