Milan, Dec. 6 (LaPresse) – “Some skeptics ask what volunteering is for. Let’s reflect on the data recently released by Istat: almost 5 million people, over 9% of our population, who dedicate 84 million hours of their time every year. Not to themselves, but to others, to those in need. Even just in economic terms, it represents an impressive treasure, a treasure based on generosity.”
This is what the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, said at the closing ceremony of Palermo Italian Capital of Volunteering 2025.
Volunteering represents “both an organized and an individual commitment that reflects a community not folded in on itself, but one that develops and puts into practice the values of social cohesion. Volunteering is a driving force for seeking and building relationships that broaden and make authentic the enjoyment of rights in society. A powerful lever for offering closeness, human warmth, fraternity. Ultimately, for giving meaning to social relations with particular attention to conditions of fragility. It is an energy that communities could not do without,” Mattarella added.
