Rome, 11 December (LaPresse) – "There are 15% of prisoners who have not been definitively convicted, many are acquitted, so their detention is unjustified. I find it more reasonable to avoid sending people to prison before trial, when they are presumed innocent, rather than releasing them, even out of leniency, after conviction when they are proven guilty." So said Justice Minister Carlo Nordio at the end of the debate at Atreju on justice reform. “We are working to redefine the prison situation and the criteria for imprisonment in three directions: the most important at the moment is the differentiated detention of drug addicts, who are more like patients in need of treatment than criminals in need of punishment. We need differentiated detention in communities with adequate supervision,” he added.
