Rome, Jan. 1 (LaPresse) – “Italy – which by its own constitutional order ‘repudiates war (…) as a means of resolving disputes’ between States – remains firmly committed to contributing to the resolution of ongoing conflicts, providing relief in humanitarian crises, and preserving an international order based on law.” This is what President Sergio Mattarella wrote in a message to Pope Leo XIV on the occasion of the 59th World Day of Peace.
“A life that is dignified and free from oppression, a freedom that constitutes both an aspiration and a common good for all peoples. This is not a utopia for naive optimists, but must be understood as a precondition for the very survival of humanity, especially in contemporary times and in the face of technological advancements of titanic potential, which nevertheless raise ethical questions and dilemmas of conscience,” Mattarella added.
“As Your Holiness emphasized during your recent apostolic visit to Lebanon, it is essential that leaders know how to ‘listen to the cry of peoples who call for peace.’ In its etymological sense, ‘to govern’ means ‘to steer the helm,’ that is, to be able to face storms in order to reach a safe harbor. If one follows unfavorable winds and gives in to fears and the most irrational impulses, shipwreck is inevitable. At the same time, the salvation of the ship depends on the entire crew. Thus, all men and women of good will are called to do their part to ensure that peace becomes just and lasting, because at its center lies the supreme value of human life.”
