Rome, Mar 16 (LaPresse) – “What we can do now is strengthen the Aspides mission, so we’re talking about the Red Sea. In the Strait of Hormuz, clearly it’s more challenging, because it would mean taking a step toward involvement. On one hand, freedom of navigation is fundamental for us, which is also the subject of a statement made today with our partners. Intervening would objectively be a step forward in involvement,” said Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, guest on the program Quarta Repubblica airing tonight on Rete4.
Italian military bases in the Gulf area “are obviously the main issue I deal with today, also because I’ve already carried out the justice reform, so I can’t do more than talk about it. They are my main concern, clearly,” Meloni added. “There is clearly a matter of monitoring and attention toward our troops, who are numerous in the area, especially regarding Erbil and Kuwait, although – the Prime Minister explains – the troops have been reduced and only those strictly necessary to carry out missions remain, which, we must remember, are important, international missions against terrorism. It is very important, in my view, to show our solidarity at this time and our presence for the Gulf countries, which are our strategic partners, and because in that area we have tens of thousands of Italians.”
