Rome, 4 April (LaPresse) – "The initiative by the five European Union economy ministers, including the Italian minister, to tackle the issue of energy companies’ windfall profits at EU level can demonstrate that Europe is capable of responding in a united and effective manner at a time marked by price rises linked to tensions in the Middle East. But to truly achieve this objective, the EU will need to develop this proposal in collaboration with stakeholders in the energy sector, establishing uniform, transparent and unambiguously applicable criteria. It is essential to ensure that the initiative is not perceived as a punitive measure or yet another tax, which would serve no purpose. The aim, in fact, cannot and must not be to target companies, but to identify the criteria for a shared contribution capable of raising and allocating extraordinary resources to the measures needed to alleviate the energy crisis." So says Stefania Craxi, chair of the Forza Italia senators. “This is also because defining what should be considered ‘extra profit’ and which earnings fall into this category carries the risk of creating uncertainty in application, disputes and potential objections from the competent authorities. Those who, like Forza Italia, have a genuinely reformist and liberal ethos, know full well that what is needed is to build viable solutions capable of supporting businesses and households during this crisis without compromising investment, growth and confidence in the market,” she adds.
