Milan, January 17 (LaPresse) – Novak Djokovic has qualified for the Round of 16 at the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam tournament of the season. The Serbian, a nine-time champion in Melbourne and seeded No. 7, easily defeated Czech player Tomas Machac, seeded No. 26, in straight sets with a score of 6-1, 6-4, 6-4 in 2 hours and 22 minutes of play.

In the next round, Djokovic will face another Czech player, Jiri Lehecka, ahead of a potential and highly anticipated quarterfinal clash with Carlos Alcaraz.

In the women’s tournament, the No. 3 seed, American Coco Gauff, also advanced to the Round of 16 by defeating Canadian Leylah Annie Fernandez (seeded 30th) 6-4, 6-2.
