Rome, Feb 10 (LaPresse) – No Giant Slalom at the World Championships for champion Mikaela Shiffrin. This was announced in a long post on social media by the American skier: ‘I poured all my energy into getting my Giant Slalom in shape to prepare for the World Cup race in Saalbach on Thursday. The long account is… I won't be there. Right now, I feel quite far away. I am currently facing some mental hurdles to get back to the start of a GS with the intensity needed for racing.’ ‘Honestly,’ Shiffrin explains, ’I didn't expect to experience so much mental/post-traumatic GS struggle because of my injury in Killington. As always, I tried to dive into the challenge, hoping to get there from the World Cup. I imagined that my passion and desire to compete would overcome the mental barriers. Maybe it will in time, but I am not there yet. Coming to terms with how scared I am to do an event I loved so much just two months ago was heartbreaking,’ he says. ‘Since we have now realised that the GS is not yet in the cards, this reopens the opportunity for me to join my teammates in the combined team,’ he adds.
