Rome, May 9 (LaPresse) – Mads Pedersen claimed the first stage of the Giro d’Italia, a 160-kilometer route from Durres to Tirana in Albania, earning the race's first pink jersey. The Danish rider from Lidl-Trek crossed the finish line ahead of Wout Van Aert (Team Visma-Lease a Bike) and Orluis Aular (Movistar Team). Francesco Busatto (Intermarché-Wanty) finished fourth. With less than four kilometers to go, Mikel Landa (Soudal Quick-Step) suffered a serious crash and was taken away by medical staff due to lower back pain. His Giro appears to be over.
