Turin, 1 June (LaPresse) – "After careful consideration, I have today informed the coach that I will not be accepting the call-up to the national team. It is not a decision I have taken lightly, because wearing the blue shirt has always been an honour and a source of pride for me. However, in light of recent events, I feel that the conditions are not right for me to continue on this path with peace of mind. I am not looking for excuses or favours, but I demand respect. And if this respect is lacking on the part of those who should be leading a group, then I prefer to step aside. I am not someone who clings to a call-up: I have always given my all, but I will not stay where I am no longer wanted, and it is clear that I am not part of the coach's plans." This was written in an Instagram post by Francesco Acerbi, Inter defender, commenting on his rejection from the national team announced today by coach Luciano Spalletti ahead of the double 2026 World Cup qualifiers. ‘This is my decision, and as I told the coach this morning, it is not final, nor is it dictated by anger, let alone “depression” over a lost Champions League final, but only by a need to take a step back,’ added Acerbi. ‘I wish the best for the national team and my teammates: I will continue to support them with the same dedication I have always shown on the pitch.’
