Rome, 4 July (LaPresse) – Giorgio Pietrangeli, son of legendary Italian tennis player Nicola Pietrangeli, 91, has died in Rome at the age of 59 from an incurable illness. The news was announced at the Policlinico Gemelli hospital in Rome, where he had been hospitalised for several days for tests. The news was announced by the Italian Tennis Federation (FITP). Giorgio Pietrangeli was one of the first Italian surfing champions in the 1980s: he competed with the national team at the 1988 World Championships in Puerto Rico and at the European Championships in Portugal the following year. In 1985, he competed in the European Championships in Forte dei Marmi, and in 1989, he won the Italian Championships in Viareggio. Giorgio leaves behind his father Nicola, his wife Carola, his daughter Nicola and his brothers Marco and Filippo. ‘The President of the Italian Tennis and Padel Federation, Angelo Binaghi, and the entire tennis community extend their deepest condolences to the family and all those who knew him during this time of immense grief,’ wrote the FITP.
