Eugene (Oregon, USA), 5 July (LaPresse/AP) – Kenyan Beatrice Chebet set a new world record in the 5,000 metres, winning the Diamond League race with a time of 13 minutes and 58.06 seconds. With her time at the Prefontaine Classic, Chebet became the first woman to run under 14 minutes in this race, surpassing the previous record of 14:00.21 set by Ethiopian Gudaf Tsegay at the 2023 Prefontaine Classic. Chebet, 25, won gold medals in the 5,000 and 10,000 metres at the Paris Olympics. Chebet held the previous world record this year in the same race, with a time of 14:06.39 set last month in Rome. The Prefontaine Classic is the only US stop on the Diamond League, the world athletics championship.
