Rome, July 25 (LaPresse) – During the men's artistic gymnastics team event at the 32nd Summer Universiade in Essen, Italian gymnast Lorenzo Bonicelli suffered a serious fall during his rings routine in the third rotation, resulting in an injury whose severity is still being assessed. The Italian Gymnastics Federation (FGI) reported the incident on its website.
The 23-year-old athlete from Lecco, competing for Ghislanzoni GAL, was immediately assisted by the German event’s medical team and the medical staff of FISU and CUSI, and transported to the nearby university hospital.
The technical staff of the Italian men’s artistic gymnastics delegation in Germany, “given the understandable emotional impact on the rest of the team, chose to withdraw from the competition.”
“While awaiting official medical updates, the entire Italian Gymnastics Federation stands by Lorenzo and wishes him a full and speedy recovery. Forza Bonni!” the FGI added.
