Rome, 5 August (LaPresse) – A turning point in Serie A starting next season. As already happened in the semi-finals and final of the Coppa Italia last May, from next season referees will announce VAR decisions to the public. This was confirmed by Gianluca Rocchi, head of referees for Serie A and Serie B, at a press conference in Cascia (Perugia) where the referees are gathered. The big news for next season in Serie A has already been tried out at the Club World Cup. The referee will be able to explain his decision directly to the stadium and on TV after a VAR intervention, Rocchi said. According to the rules approved by the IFAB, when the review process is complete, the referee must make the “TV screen” gesture and communicate the final decision. Competitions may also implement a system whereby the referee explains and publicly announces decisions following a VAR “review” or a long VAR “check”, as outlined in the FIFA guidelines and the VAR Manual.
