Milan, Aug. 7 (LaPresse) – A fresh and generational clash will decide the “Omnium Banque Nationale” title, the WTA 1000 tournament in Montreal, Canada, with a prize pool of $5,152,599. The final will feature wild card Victoria Mboko, ranked No. 85 (career-best), and four-time Grand Slam champion and former world No. 1 Naomi Osaka, currently ranked No. 49.
In the Italian night semifinal, Canadian teenager Mboko pulled off a stunning comeback, defeating Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina (world No. 12, seed No. 9) 1-6, 7-5, 7-6(4) in a marathon lasting nearly three hours, saving a match point along the way. Meanwhile, 27-year-old Osaka took her revenge on Denmark’s Clara Tauson—who had beaten her in the Auckland final earlier this year—winning 6-2, 7-6(7) in just under two hours.
