New York (New York, USA), 3 September. (LaPresse/AP) – Venus Williams' US Open campaign ended with defeat in the women's doubles quarter-finals, where she partnered Leylah Fernandez, against the top-seeded pair of Taylor Townsend and Katerina Siniakova 6-1, 6-2. At the end of the match, which lasted 56 minutes at Louis Armstrong Stadium, Williams smiled as she approached the net to shake hands with Siniakova and then hug Townsend. Thousands of spectators stood up to give Williams a standing ovation. Townsend and Siniakova also joined in the applause for her. ‘Growing up watching Venus and her sister Serena was an inspiration to me and my sister,’ Townsend told the crowd, ‘it was an honour to share the court today.’ Venus Williams, 45, was out of competition for 16 months until her return to the court at a tournament in Washington in July. Her last major tournament was the 2023 US Open.
