Rome, 8 September (LaPresse) – ‘It took just a quarter (of a century) to become the team of the century. Because winning every match at the Olympic Games, every match at the World Championships and every match in between is something whose difficulty and beauty is even difficult to imagine, let alone explain’. So says Mauro Berruto, former coach of the men's national volleyball team and current member of the national secretariat of the Democratic Party, with responsibility for sport. "Just as it is difficult to explain that winning is possible, but to reach the podium in three consecutive world championships, in a global sport such as volleyball, is a sensational achievement. Nothing but compliments and admiration for all these girls, for those who came before them, for this technical staff, for those who came before them. And if this team is the team of the century (and not only in women's sport, nor only in volleyball), there is not much more to add about Julio Velasco: it has been an immense honour to have admired, studied and challenged him. And there is one more thing to say: the fact that the Italian volleyball school is something with very few precedents in the history of world sport is demonstrated by another detail that can be found on the Turkish bench: Daniele Santarelli," he added.
