Lisbon (Portugal), 18 September (LaPresse/AP) – Everything as expected: José Mourinho is the new Benfica coach. The Portuguese club announced that it had reached an agreement with the coach, who returns to Benfica after 25 years and rejoins the Portuguese league 21 years after winning the Champions League with Porto in 2004. Mourinho was chosen by club president Rui Costa following the home defeat to Qarabag, which cost Bruno Lage his job. He had already been in charge of Benfica in 2000 but left the job after just three months due to a contractual dispute. Mourinho was then sacked by Fenerbahçe after they were knocked out of the Champions League qualifiers by Benfica. Another coincidence: in his new role, he will be coaching Richard Rios, who was closely followed by Roma, the last Italian club managed by the Special One, during the last transfer window.
